SHOOT FILM, DON’T GO BROKE

World-renowned services combining years of laboratory experience with top-of-the-line scanning hardware, the Lasergraphics 6.5K HDR Scanstation, for a killer price. We have handled millions of feet of film from clients all over the world!

Processing currently uses select, trusted 3rd party labs until our own machines are fully online and tested. IN-HOUSE PROCESSING IS IN THE WORKS! Until then, please expect about 1-2 weeks (16mm or 35mm color negative) or 2-3 weeks (Super8, reversal, B&W) for your film to be routed through the wet lab and back, depending on your film format

THE SECRET SAUCE
(a better scanning method)

  • Your scans are always sampled from the full 6.5K resolution sensor, which allows for true 2K and 4K scans with no cheated resolutions! Oversampling also results in reduced aliasing and sensor noise

  • Overscanning is delivered at higher resolutions to preserve the optical resolution of the image area. So a 2K overscan is actually 2.5K, for example

  • All color correction is done in post in order to maximize the quality and accuracy of the process

  • HDR is used on every scan. I’ve worked with Lasergraphics to author custom software with unique settings for the best extraction of your film’s contrast range. The results go beyond most other HDR processes that are offered by other services, even those that use the same scanner model!

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

COLOR CORRECTION

  • Flat / Log. Low contrast, low saturation scanning that requires post-color work. Black and white points are still tweaked on a per-film basis to ensure that all data is being recorded properly

  • Best Light. Color and contrast are carefully optimized in post with a single correction per reel, including gamma, saturation, and balance. Custom sharpening methods applied if desired

  • Timed. Color and contrast are carefully optimized in post with multiple corrections per reel, including gamma, saturation, and balance. Custom sharpening methods applied if desired

CLEANING

Includes leader, splice check, repair, and hand clean. Multiple camera loads may be consolidated onto larger reels or cores for more reliable scanning. This adds $3 per roll of film regardless of length

CROPPING

Exact resolutions depend on origination format and desired cropping to optimize the optical resolution of the scan

TURNAROUND TIME

  • Most production scans of newly shot, already developed material can be completed in 1-4 days depending on size and complexity of options such as color correction

  • Film in need of development usually requires about 2-3 weeks to make it through the wet-lab and then to me for scanning

  • Archival scanning usually requires more handling time due to more rigorous cleaning and repair. Expect usually 1-4 weeks for archival jobs unless it’s a large number of elements

  • Home movies usually require more handling time than either of these. (see the general Media Digitization page for streamlined options, or send it in as a professional scanning job for a-la-carte options)
